Scotland’s society has struggled to adapt to changing economic circumstances in the last three decades – poorly handled industrial change has brought economic inactivity into many Scottish communities, as economic development policies have failed to create quality employment. However, significant opportunities now present themselves: Scotland wants to lead the world in the transition to a low-carbon economy by creating a new, more sustainable and more interventionist approach to economy. This paper is part of a series of papers which have resulted from the Whose Economy? seminar series, held in Scotland in 2010 – 2011, whose purpose was to provide a space for researchers, representative organisations, policy-makers and people with experience of poverty to come together and explore the causes of poverty and inequality in today’s Scotland.
