Marwa is the research and policy coordinator for Oxfam GB's Middle East, Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (MEEECIS) region. Her background is in research and policy.
Since 2009, and as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional director for Crisis Action based in Cairo, Marwa has led on-going campaigns for Crisis Action in the region with a focus on Sudan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel, bringing together regional civil society actors and policy decision makers and working on public opinion outreach, including the media.
More recently, Marwa has led Crisis Action's work responding to the recent pro-democracy wave in the Arab world, calling on the League of Arab States, the EU and the UN Security Council to take action to prevent human rights abuses and protect civilians at risk in Syria, Libya and Egypt. She has also led delegations to visit senior officials in the Egyptian government and the League of Arab States.
Prior to this, she worked with CARE International in various roles, with a specific focus on Middle East and Europe region. During this time she was based in London, Amman and Cairo. Marwa has also worked as a consultant with the Centre of Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) at the American University in Cairo (AUC). In the past, Marwa has worked for the Ford Foundation Regional MENA Office in Cairo, as well as programmes funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in MENA region.
