Makarand has been a development practitioner for over 17 years. His current work focuses primarily on assisting country and regional programmes to improve the impact they make on the lives of poor people.
He worked in the private sector for three years before joining a grass-roots civil society organisation in India. He then went on to form and manage a development consultancy firm for eleven years, before joining Oxfam GB in the Afghanistan programme in 2008. He then moved on to work in the Oxfam GB South Asia Regional Centre in New Delhi, before moving to Kenya.
Makarand is an alumni of two of India's premier academic institutions: IIT, Bombay, and IIM, Ahmedabad. He is also a member of the Community of Evaluators, South Asia.
